Taxpayers must be enlightened –CITN

There is a need to enlighten taxpayers in order to enhance the level of tax compliance in the country, a tax professional has said.

The Chairman, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Ikorodu District Society, Mrs. Abimbola Olumegbon, said professional bodies had the duty of educating the public on tax matters in order to bridge the gap between taxpayers and tax evaders/defaulters.

Olumegbon said, “It is our duty as professional bodies to continue to inform the public about tax so that the people can take advantage of it. There is a huge knowledge gap between the tax payers and tax evaders and this is responsible for the high rate of population not paying tax.

“This is just a symposium to sensitise the people to the  Voluntary Assets and Income  and Declaration Scheme and its advantages.”

She spoke at a symposium facilitated by the Ikorodu District of the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Lagos State Inland Revenue Service.

The Managing Partner, Momolt and Co Chartered Accountants & Tax Consultants, Mr. Tunde Longe, on his part, said individuals and corporate bodies must know their tax status and regularise it.

Longe, one of the resource persons, urged people to pay their taxes because “without tax there is no progress for any society”.
